The Elements of Thoughts

  1. PURPOSE
    1. I understand "purpose" to mean the reason why something is done.
    2. In other words, if you are working to reach a goal or trying to accomplish something you have a purpose.
    3. An example of someone exhibiting purpose using social media would be creating a GoFundMe page to help someone. There was a popular story going around last year about a homeless man who gave $20 to a couple stranded on a road in Philadelphia. The couple started a GoFundMe page to raise money for the homeless man and it got over $400,000. Now there's a lot of drama because apparently the couple isn't giving him the full amount but that's not the point, they had a purpose to raise money for this man and they used Social Media to accomplish it.
  2. QUESTION
    1. I understand "question" to mean asking something with the intention of getting information.
    2. In other words, asking clear and specific questions about something will get you information/answers on the topic
    3. An example of someone exhibiting questioning using social media would be you see a picture on instagram of a really cool hike and they didn't put the location in it so you ask where it is? And if they don't answer because most people like to keep it a secret you can post it on your story and ask your followers.
  3. ASSUMPTIONS
    1. I understand "assumptions" to mean thinking a thing is true or is going to happen without proof.
    2. In other words, assuming things can impact our thinking/reasoning process. It not good to assume because assumptions are not based on facts. A way to stop dong this is to do research and get the facts.
    3. An example of someone exhibiting assumptions using social media would be thinking Ariana Grande is the reason for Mac Millers death. I see a ton of tweets blaming her when it was his own stubence abuse problem.
  4. POINT OF VIEW
    1. I understand "point of view" to mean the way you see things.
    2. In other words, everyone has a different point because we are all different. It's important to understand that your opinion isn't the only opinion. Seeing things from others point of view will help broaden your own thinking.
    3. An example of someone exhibiting a point of view using social media would be when you see a post that you don't agree with. Maybe someone posted their opinion on guns and you don't agree because your point of view is different.
  5. DATA, INFORMATION and EVIDENCE.
    1. I understand "DATA, INFORMATION and EVIDENCE." to mean your own knowledge you gained from research, school or personal experiences.
    2. In other words, when you're having a conversation with someone you don't have time to research everything little thing before you say it so you use the information you already have in your brain.
    3. An example of someone exhibiting data, information or evidence using social media would be sharing a post on facebook or instagram about a trip you just took. You don't have to do any research because you're sharing your own personal experiences.
  6. CONCEPTS and IDEAS.
    1. I understand "CONCEPTS and IDEAS." to mean thoughts that help us understand what we are talking about.
    2. In other words, we use concepts and ideas to help us grasp lager topics. They are used to form questions and the questions will help us understand the purpose.
    3. An example of someone exhibiting concepts and ideas using social media would be asking a question on reddit and other people giving you their thoughts and ideas on the topic.
  7. INFERENCES or INTERPRETATIONS by which we draw CONCLUSIONS
    1. I understand "inferences and interpretations" to mean the info we use to draw our own conclusions.
    2. In other words, we come to conclusions based on our own thoughts, experience, and research.
    3. An example of someone exhibiting inferences and interpretations using social media would be you see your friend post a sad quote or song lyric and you come to the conclusion that they're sad.
  8. IMPLICATIONS and CONSEQUENCES.
    1. I understand "implications and consequences" to mean a possible effect/result of an action.
    2. In other words, the things we say or do will have negative/positive consequences. Everything elicits some kind of reaction.
    3. An example of someone exhibiting the implications and consequences using social media would be posting something very controversial on your page, you can get a lot of different reactions from people some may agree and some may write negative things.
  9. The purpose of the assignment is to understand how analytical people think. It talks about the different steps and processes to think analytically.
  10. The key question at the heart of the assignment is after reading and learning about analytical thinking, can you apply it to yourself?

  1. Hi Elena,
You did well putting the elements of though in your own words. I'm questioning the precision of you statement , "we come to conclusions based on our own thoughts, experience, and research."

Yes this is true . However. an inference is a step of the mind, an intellectual act by which one concludes that something is true in light of something else’s being true, or seeming to be true. If you come at me with a knife in your hand, I probably would infer that you mean to do me harm. Inferences can be accurate or inaccurate, logical or illogical, justified or unjustified.

    Do you see the difference?
    Thanks
    Greg

  3. I am questioning the precision of your statement "An example of someone exhibiting concepts and ideas using social media would be asking a question on reddit and other people giving you their thoughts and ideas on the topic." because of the varying types of peoples on reddit, the misrepresentations of your initial question may be viewed by them, leading to a greater misunderstanding of ideas and concepts thrown around by the users.

  4. Hi Elena

Your statement about points of views was spot on in my opinion, and your example really clarified it all. People are entitled to their own opinions and we need to be able to respect those opinions even we do not agree.
